Here Picasso expresses his anger toward the German bombing of the northern Spanish town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The painting contains many symbols representing the destruction of the town and the people's resulting despair. The use of stark greys, whites and blacks helps to convey the somber tone.

The Windmills of La Mancha

The land of Don Quijote, La Mancha is flat and barren. No wonder Don Quijote mistook these huge structures with moving arms for giants, which he intended to defeat in honor of his lady, Dulcinea.

The Aqueduct of Segovia

This aqueduct was built during the time of the Roman emperor Trajan in the 1st century. The stones are carefully fitted and no mortar (cement) was used. It is the best preserved aqueduct in Europe.
